Advanced Video Workshop: Greek Gods & Myths

What would happen if the characters from these myths were alive today? What stories would they tell? Filmmakers will make their own original video based on these classic stories. Students will learn to use equipment, as well as directing, acting, writing, and editing.

Adventures with Clay and Paper Mache

Clay is a special kind of mud. We will explore some of the things you can do with clay. Pinch pots, coil method, slab, and others. We will look at pottery from other cultures. The second half of the semester will focus on paper mache. This practical craft form has been used for just about everything, from art objects, bowls to furniture.

Art in Myths and Legends

These stories are filled with exciting plots and superhuman characters allowing the artist’s imagination to run wild. Using St. George and the Dragon, Medusa and lcarus, as well as other myths, students will create story boxes, mosaics, masks, flip books etc. The final project will be the student’s creation of his/her own myth along with an artistic form of representation.

Utilizing the electronics alongside recycled materials, kids create contraptions, kinetic sculptures, and creative objects that can move, make sound, and light up! (Extra $25 fee for this class.)

CBE KIDS: News & Broadcasting

Have you ever wanted to be a reporter or news anchor? Taught by a former NBC News producer, News Broadcasting will teach students about news gathering, field reporting and studio production. At the end of semester, students will deliver a complete news package. Students will also learn how to operate a camera, ask the right interview questions and some basic editing skills. We will interview people on the street, shop owners and staff at CBE.

CBE NEWS: Movie Maker

Do you have a story that you want to turn into a movie and make it with your friends? This class will help students combine their favorite stories from children’s literature and fairy tales; they will combine their ideas into an original 8-10 minutes film. Students will learn how to use a video camera, sound equipment and write a script, as well as some basic acting skills. The filming will take place at CBE

Read-aloud with books such as Sheep in a Jeep will reinforce concepts and create excitement about science learning.

Class is limited to five students. Children will learn the basics of piano playing through exploration of a vast repertoire. Mini Musical Beauty and the Beast with Child’s Play NY: Acting on Imagination

Self-expression and artistry are the name of the game in our Mini Musical program! Kids work in-depth on Beauty and the Beast and use its plot as a springboard for our own mini-plays. We will explore a magical castle as Belle, create our own Beast language and then help to translate it into English, become members of the castle with special house-work powers. We’ll learn multiple versions of the classic French fairy tale, “La Belle et la Bête” and create our own new take through story-telling.  Sing songs from the B’way version and learn how to dance at a ball! There is an extra $100 fee for this class.

Mini Musical Rapunzel & Flynn with Child’s Play NY: Acting on Imagination

Venture to the top of the tower with us as we get “Tangled” up in the classic Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel! We learn songs from the latest film version as well as Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” There is a $100 additional fee for this course.

Why do giraffes have long necks? Why are so many fish shaped differently? Why do cheetahs need 4 legs? Students will learn about animals and how their bodies help them perform specific tasks. The class gets to use LEGO robotics to create animal robots and make them move. They’ll also learn concepts like torque, and angular velocity make designing these “Anibots” trickier than it may appear. Welcome to the jungle! There is an extra $300 fee for this class. Welcome to a theatre class that introduces kids to Shakespeare’s dramatic masterpieces in a way that is accessible, enriching and fun!  Students will learn the plots of famous plays and act out the salient points of character and through long-form improvisations.  They will also commit to memory short passages and scenes from these Shakespeare’s plays.  This instills the children with cultural references from the wisdom of plays like, A Midsummer Night’s Dream,  The Tempest,  Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet that they will utilize for years to come.  Games surrounding the characters and their incredible conflicts, desires and stories make the class an incredibly joyous exploration of both theater and Shakespeare. There is an extra $100 fee for this class.

Super Soccer Stars

Get the ball rolling and join Super Soccer Stars right here at CBE! Dynamic international coaches work with every student to develop skills, self-confidence, and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive environment. Positive reinforcement and low child-to-coach ratios ensure that each child will improve his or her soccer skills through engaging activities and games–while having endless fun! Each child receives a t-shirt on the first day of class. There is an extra $55 fee for this class.

Tap Dancing

Tap shoes required. This class stresses the basics of tap. Students will develop combinations that are great to watch and delightful to hear. Boys are encouraged to join. Spring performance.

Tap/Jazz

This class stresses the basics of tap. Students will develop combinations that are great to watch and delightful to hear. Boys are encouraged to join. In Jazz students will focus on across the floor movements, center combination work, beginner leaps and turns. Tap shoes required.

Tennis

CBE: Thursdays, K-1st Grade, 3:45-4:45PM; Thursdays, 2nd-5th Grade, 4:45-5:45PM
Classes feature interactive drills and games that teach the fundamentals of tennis: forehand, backhand, volley, serves and overhead. Students will develop fine and gross motor skills as well as eye/hand coordination skills crucial to tennis. Sneakers and a water bottle are required. Racquets are provided, but if you have your own racquet you can bring it.

Textile Design

CBE: Thursdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 4:45-5:45PM
This advanced course will combine sewing, weaving fabric applique on clothing as well as landscape design. (2nd grade eligible with permission from instructor.)

Thingamajigs, Gizmos, and Gadgets

Students will enter into the world of kinetic building. They will learn to make moving structures, simple DIY machines, and even fidget spinners! From winding clocks in a time machine to toy vending machines, students will work with materials like metal, wood, wire, rubber bands, and more, while learning the basics of architecture and engineering in a fun and creative environment.

Video Workshop: Monster Mash

Students learn video basics to tell stories in this program. Children will be encouraged to make a short video based on their favorite ghouls, monsters and creatures. Children will use live action, animation and interviews. Use of equipment and basic editing will be included.

What’s So Funny?

Students will learn the art and skills used to make an original comedy. They will explore various types of humor and they write, direct, perform, and edit an original video comedy.

What’s the Story with Slime? (And other gooey stuff!)

Find out the science behind slime. What makes it so flexible, gooey and fun? What kind of substance it anyway? (Think “polymers”) In this class you’ll make multiple types of slime; edible, fluffy and glowing slime, to name a few. You’ll test and compare the attributes of different slime types by cutting, stretching and pounding them.  Then you’ll use this scientific process to create and test other substances like glue and chalk. This class introduces concepts in the areas of materials science and engineering.

Word Drumming

This drumming course is an eclectic and enriching way for your child to learn rhythms from Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. The class includes fun warm-ups with body rhythms and chants.

Yoga

In this exciting new approach to teaching yoga, kids will learn how to relax and soothe their bodies and minds through a series
of yoga poses and breathing exercises. Ellie will use nature and Hebrew words to explore poses in a fun and exciting way.

Our yoga program focuses on physical activity, breathing techniques and relaxation practices in every class. Enhancing flexibility and coordination, building strength and self-confidence, developing body awareness, cultivating focus, and encouraging quiet contemplation. Class is structured to balance individual expression and growth while building positive group dynamics and conscientious friendships.
