Big Ideas Night with Ta-Nehisi Coates
November 18, 2018 @ 7:00 pm
Join us for a Big Ideas Night with Ta-Nehisi Coates as he discussses the midterm elections, the state of American politics, and the historical currents that inform our present.
“We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In his sweeping collection of new and selected essays, now in paperback, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s “first white president.”
Tickets are $20-22 and include a paperback copy of We Were Eight Years in Power.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is a distinguished writer in residence at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. He is the author of the bestselling books The Beautiful Struggle, We Were Eight Years in Power, and Between The World And Me, which won the National Book Award in 2015. Ta-Nehisi is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. He is also the current author of the Marvel comics The Black Panther and Captain America.
Presented by Brooklyn By the Book and Random House Events.
