Brooklyn by the Book with Nicole Krauss

September 12, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Nicole Krauss’s Forest Dark is an achingly beautiful and breathtakingly original novel about personal transformation, interweaving the stories of two disparate individuals whose transcendental search leads them to the same Israeli desert. One of the characters is a wealthy, older lawyer who feels an irresistible need to give away all his possessions, alarming his children and colleagues. With the last of his money, he travels to Israel where he is sidetracked by a charismatic rabbi, who insists that the lawyer is a descendant of King David. The other character is a well-known woman novelist in a failing marriage hoping that if she goes to Israel she will find a way to overcome her writer’s block. She, too, is sidetracked, this time by a retired literature professor (and/or Mossad agent and/or chimera), who lures into a project–involving Franz Kafka–that she can’t turn down, and that alters her life in ways she could never have imagined. Bursting with life and humor, Forest Dark is a profound, mesmerizing novel of metamorphosis and self-realization–of looking beyond all that is visible towards the infinite. In conversation with Rivka Galchen.
