Learning about Israel, and wrapping up a year of Torah stories!

This week our Second graders finished going through their Torah stories for the year! They also continued to learn about Israel through their Hebrew Through Movement lessons!

Saturday Jewish Studies

Elie’s Class

Last week my class wrote a script based on a biblical story they covered this year. The three groups wrote dialogue and scenes based on Adam and Eve, Purim and Passover. This next week they will make props and preform their plays.

David’s Class

Last Shabbat, we completed our study of the Torah. This week, our last class of the year, we will draw a giant mural highlighting all the things we learned this year, and then have fun at the year-end picnic!

Tuesday Jewish Studies

This week each student made their own Torah cover. This Torah cover will go over the mini-Torahs that students have been working on all school year. After each story we learned, students created a page and we have been collecting them all year. Your student will bring home their Torah on our last day next week!

Hebrew Through Movement

Saturday

This week in Hebrew through movement we celebrated Yom Haazmaut- Israel’s Independence Day!
We learned the Hebrew Word for flag- דגל (degel) and saw how does The Israeli flag look like.
We all got a chance to create our own flag using the colors blue -כחול (Kachol) and white- לבן (lavan). We learned the words strip- קו (Kav) for the two blue stripes and triangle-משולש (meshulash) in order to draw Magen David (מגן דוד).
By the time class was over in was filled with beautiful flags that the kids brought home, just in time for yom haazmaut on Thursday!

Tuesday

Shalom! We had so much fun celebrating Israel’s Independence Day by learning about some of the major cities in Israel, following Hebrew commands and matching tmunot/pictures of some of these city sites with their location in Israel on a giant floor map of Israel.

We focused on these cities and places:

Chaifa (Haifa): a view of the city and ports from the top of Mt. Carmel

Tel Aviv: a picture of the bustling coastal city and the Agam art monument in Dizengoff Sq

Yerushalim (Jerusalem): The Kotel and Wailing Wall

Yam HaMelach (The Dead Sea): a picture

Be’er Sheva (southern city in the Negev): a picture of a Bedouin woman dressed in traditional clothing

Eilat (resort city at the southern tip): pictures of coral fish, parasailing and the underwater observatory

Wednesday

We wrapped Yom Ha’atzmaut lessons. This week most of our focus was about food:

Hummus – חומוס
Pita – פיתה
Falafel – פלאפל
To eat – Le’echol – לאכול

Next week we will rehearse the entire vocabulary from this year using different games.
