Our New Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer

We are thrilled to welcome Alan Herman as our Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, effective July 15.

This wonderful news comes following a thoughtful and in-depth search led skillfully by our Search Committee—chairs Cindy Caplan and Lisa Lieberman and members Tomer Inbar, Lou Mintz, and Cara Raich—in close partnership with our clergy, staff, and consultants.

Prior to joining Congregation Beth Elohim, Alan served as the Executive Director of Sutton Place Synagogue in Manhattan where he quickly illustrated his ability to handle facility and security issues, manage budgets and, most importantly, build meaningful relationships within the community.

Before becoming an Executive Director, Alan spent over 25 years in the for-profit world working in various roles within the consumer product industry. Throughout his career, building relationships and developing the team around him has always been central to who he is.

As an active lay leader and a member of Central Synagogue’s Board of Trustees, Alan was involved with social justice and building community. One of his areas of focus was revamping the Breakfast Program which provides a full hot meal to over 100 people every Thursday and Friday morning. Alan helped transform the model from a group of five people who shouldered the full responsibility to an active volunteer list over 350 people strong. In addition, he helped imagine and implement the “No One is a Stranger” initiative, which remains a cornerstone of connecting and engaging people more than ten years after its inception.

A native New Yorker, Alan, his wife Miriam, and their eight year old daughter Noa live on Manhattan’s East Side. Since his very first visit, Alan felt the warm embrace of the community and knew with full conviction that CBE was where he wanted to be. The Herman family is looking forward to sharing meaningful moments together with CBE for many years to come.

Please join us in giving a warm CBE welcome to Alan and his family!
