Shabbat unit:

Third grade has started learning about Shabbat! They’ve been learning or reviewing the prayers over candles, grape juice/wine, hand washing, and challah. Students are also making their own Shabbat candlesticks, so they’ll have ownership over the Shabbat process. If your student is in one of Jaz’s classes, they’ll will be bringing home a candlestick that takes a tealight, and Lauren’s class will be bringing home candlesticks that take tall skinny candles. We’re also talking about different ways that different people celebrate Shabbat, in history and in different communities.

Hebrew

3rd grade worked on these verbs – to touch, to pick up, to put down\on .They were also introduced and continued working on different body parts – head, eyes, mouth, nose, ears, hands, belly and legs. Next week, they’ll start learning some Hebrew Shabbat vocab!

Questions to ask your children!

1) Why do you think Jewish people have celebrated Shabbat?
2) Which of the things you’ve been doing at Yachad about Shabbat do you like best?
Also, if you have Shabbat dinner at home sometime in the next month, you might see if your 3rd grader wants to lead or help lead any of the prayers. Some students were very enthusiastic about it, and we’ve been rotating the role of prayer leader in the classroom, so that over the year, they’ll all have practice at leading prayers.
