Jacob and Esau (Mon/Wed)
This week, we continued learning about the story of Jacob and Esau on Monday. The students began developing arguments about whether or not they think Jacob is guilty of stealing his father’s birthright.
Additionally, as the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat falls on the same weekend as Martin Luther King Jr. day, we had a conversation on Wednesday about similarities between the two holidays. We read the Jewish folk tale of Honi the Circle Maker who learns the importance of planting trees, even if they won’t bear fruit in his own lifetime. This led into a discussion of legacies, both of Honi and of Dr. King. In the end, each student made a self portrait in which they wrote or drew the legacies they hope to one day leave behind. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend of service in honor of MLK day!
