Learning more about Tu B’Shvat!

This week, our Second graders learned about Tu B’Shvat, and began projects to explore our holiday of the trees!

Saturday Jewish Studies

We were closed for MLK weekend! We hope everyone had a good long-weekend and that some of you were able to participate in service projects!

Tuesday Jewish Studies

This week we learned about Tu Bishvat. After watching a little video about what we do to celebrate Tu Bishvat, we each shared with each other our 3 favorite things that trees give us. Then we learned a fun Tu Bishvat song. After, we painted pots and checked to see how the seeds we planted last week are doing- many are sprouting! Next week we will plant our sprouts in our newly painted pots.

David’s Class

Hello dear parents,
This week we dealt with Tu B’Shvat [ט=9 ו=6, together this is the 15th of Shevat. It is interesting that we do not say the י”ה[also 15] because it is part of the name of God and do not want to use it just as a number]. As part of the discussion, we talked about the halachic laws relevant to the Jewish tree’s birthday
[Terumah – gifts for Kohen, Ma’aser – gifts for Levi and Orla – eating from the fruit only in his fourth year, in Jerusalem], and understanding that nothing is really ours, but that everything is a gift and we must share it with those who need it.
We talked about things the children like about the trees and their usefulness [like to climb them to the top – surprise, they help us breathe, they have tasty fruits, the trees give us shade, and more].
At the end of the lesson we painted potted plants, in which we will plant the seeds that sprouted together last week.
Have a week full of buds and sweet fruits,
David.

Hebrew Through Movement

Tuesday

This week we learned about Tu-Bishvat -ט”וּ בִּשְׁבָט ! We discussed the holiday’s customs, such as planting trees and eating fruits typically grown in Israel. In addition, we learned the following words:

Tree – Etz – עֵץ
Fruit – Pri – פְּרִי
Apple – Tapuach – תפוח
Lemon – Limon – לימון
Pomegranate – Rimon – רימון
Date – Tamar – תמר

We also tied the Tu Bishvat vocabulary to the Hebrew vocabulary of the blessing over fruits (of trees) – “borei pri hetz” before eating apple and date. Try to say these fruits in Hebrew with your families at home!

Wednesday

Today Ofir subbed for Inbal, and worked with the kids on the following vocabulary:

Pencil – Iparon – עיפרון
Marker – Tush – טוש
Book – Sefer – ספר

They further practiced the above words by combining them with previous vocabulary in different games.
