Tie-dyed dream coats, clay plagues, and more Torah arts projects!

Last week our Second graders continued learning about the stories of Moses and Joseph, with art projects to match!

Saturday Jewish Studies

David’s Class

In our next class, we will continue our study of the Book of Exodus. This past class we learned about the major events leading to the Israelites’ escape from slavery.  Students used pantomime and art to explore these events. Next class we will step into the shoes of our ancestors on their path from freedom to revelation at Sinai.

Elie’s Class

This past week we learned about the 10 plagues. we played a memory game where each plague corresponded to a movement.  I would should out a plague and the kids would do the action (kind of like Simon says). They also chose a plague they wanted to highlight and made a clay sculpture of it. After, the kids made a comic book depicting Moses asking pharaoh to let the Jewish people go.

Tuesday Jewish Studies

This week we continued in the Torah to the story of Joseph. We learned that Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son and that Jacob gave him a special coat. That made Joseph’s 11 brothers very jealous. As a class we discussed weather or not we though it was right for Jacob to give Joseph the special coat. We stopped at the part in Joseph’s story where his brothers throw him into a pit and then sell him to merchants going to Egypt. We will find out next week what happens when Joseph gets to Egypt.
We tie dyed our own “multi-colored” coats, just like Jacob’s special gift to Joseph. We also watched the beginning of the movie “Joseph King of Dreams.”

Wednesday Jewish Studies

Lauren’s Class

This week we continued learning about Joseph. We tie dyed our own “multi-colored” coats, just like Jacob’s special gift to Joseph. We also watched a bit more of the movie “Joseph King of Dreams.”

David’s Class

Dear Parents,
Pesach is late this year, but in our work on the story of Joseph, we thought together why we actually became a people of slaves in Egypt. One of the most plausible suggestions is the sale of Yosef by his brothers to Egypt, and the punishment here comes exactly as it says in the verses: “An eye for an eye.”
We almost finished the film about Joseph, and we also prepared colorful shirts, which the children will receive after returning from vacation.
Shabbat Shalom and all the good,
David.

Hebrew Through Movement

Saturday

Ofir will have an update for us again next week!

Tuesday

Shalom Families,

We are starting to prepare for Purim! On Tuesday, Yachad students learned Hebrew vocabulary heard on Purim but also in our frequent Jewish payer blessings. Students also reviewed Hebrew positional words by following commands where they manipulated illustrated cards of Melech Ahseuras and Malkat Ester!
מלך – melech – king (Melech David, Melech Shaul, Melech haolam)
מלכה – malkah – queen (Malkat Shabat, Malkat Ester)
כתר – keter – crown (ex. Keter Torah)
עולם –  olam – world/universe (Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech haolam)
על – al – on
תחת – tachat – under
על-יד – al-yad – near
On 2/26, we will review these words as well as learn some new colors: שחור/shachor/black and לבן/lavan/white)
Have a wonderful President’s week break!

Wednesday

This week we reviewed previous vocabulary of colors, body parts and directions, and practiced it through different songs and games.

We’re looking forward to start learning about Purim after the break!!
