2nd Grade: Practicing Teshuva and Preparing for Rosh Hashanah

This week in 2nd Grade we were so excited to learn all about Rosh Hashanah and tesuva or being our best selves.

Jewish Studies

Tuesdays/Wednesdays Jewish Studies with Haley

This week, 2nd grade learned all about Rosh Hashanah. We learned what the holiday means, the important ritual objects used that day and foods eaten to celebrate a sweet new year. We focused a lot on the word Teshuva which means returning to our best selves. We each thought of something we want to work on in the coming year to practice teshuva. We turned these promises into sticks that each student can hold and keep as a reminder of the promise they made to themselves. We are so excited to bring in a sweet new year together at CBE.

Saturday Jewish Studies with Anat and Ashley

This week, students ate Shabbat snacks and had their first Hebrew Through Movement class. We had a conversation about kehilah (community) and kehilah kedoshah (holy community) and talked about the differences between them. We talked about our own kehilah kedoshah and about what we have in common here at CBE. When we identified that we are all Jewish, it brought up the question: what makes someone Jewish? We came up with a variety of answers: your family, your traditions, the things you believe, and/or your choice to be Jewish all make a Jew a Jew! We brainstormed rules for our kehilah kedoshah that are going to help us achieve our goals of learning, and having fun.

Saturday Family Program

During the K-2 family program after class on Shabbat parents and students explored ways to show more kavod (respect) in this coming year. Parents dove into intention setting and respect through biblical, Talmudic and modern psychology texts while students played games and sang songs to show where they see kavod between themselves and family members, babysitters, teachers, neighbors and animals and how they can create more kavod in their worlds.

Hebrew Through Movement

Tuesdays/Wednesdays Hebrew Through Movement with Edan
2nd grade worked on these verbs – to stand, to sit, to walk, to stop, to run, to jump, to spin. Nouns: everyone, team (A/B/C), Door, table, chair, teacher, counselor, board, window. Additionally they were introduced to the adverbs slow, fast, in place.
