Analyzing Propaganda and Celebrating Purim

Happy Purim! To celebrate, 6th graders got to choose their own activities.

Purim activities included: Megillah Movie Making, Hamentashen-Shaped Card Making, Purim Madlibs, Face painting, Purim Trivia, and learning how to block print. For the block printing activity, students carved Purim themed blocks and stamped them onto bags. These bags were then filled by the students with various treats and will be gifted to project ORE. Project ORE serves homeless, formerly homeless, mentally-ill, and/or at-risk Jewish seniors on the Lower East Side. It is a wonderful program that serves a hot kosher lunch each day and provides a sense of community for Jewish older adults who might otherwise feel marginalized in Jewish community. ORE also provides comprehensive clinical and social services.

In Jewish Studies, Bryan Susman from Facing History and Ourselves came in to guest teach. In his lesson, students investigated how the Nazis used propaganda to encourage conformity and consent among the German population in response to their ideas and policies. By following a specific procedure to closely analyze several propaganda images, students observed both the subtle and overt messages the Nazis wished to communicate to Germans through the media and what those messages suggest about the “national community” the Nazis wished to create. The observation and analysis skills students practiced in this lesson will help to develop their media literacy so that they may respond more thoughtfully and deliberately to the countless media messages that compete for their attention each day.

Book Drive and Card Making at the Purim Carnival 3/24!

Yet another opportunity to share the spirit of our community and our love of reading! At the Purim Carnival the Youth Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a Book Drive and Card Making table to benefit pediatric patients at Methodist Hospital. Bring a gently used (or new) book to the Purim Carnival and stop by to add a card and ribbon. This is a great opportunity to talk with your kids about the importance of giving back to their community, and to help them choose a book of their own to donate to sick children! Books will also be available for purchase. Through Reach Out And Read (ROAR), pediatric patients at Methodist are read to by volunteers and then can take the books home with them. Preschool through early elementary ages books are always needed. If you have a child in middle school who would like to volunteer at this table please email Bonnie Kerker at bonniekerker@yahoo.com
