Are Bagels Holy?

Last Saturday our First Graders finished their unit on Shabbat!

Jewish Studies with Ashley

Hi First Grade B Families! On Saturday, we finished up our 3-week Shabbat unit. We reviewed the material we had covered in past weeks, including saying all three blessings over grape juice, challah, and Shabbat candles. We discussed the concept of holiness, using a working definition of “something that special in a Jewish way”. We played a game where students drew out of a hat a slip of paper that had an object written on it (shoe, Torah, kippah, etc.). The student then had to designate if the object was holy or not. The whole class had a lively discussion of whether or not bagels are holy! What do you think?

I also want to note that students did a fantastic job adjusting to a routine change this week. We moved our choice time to later in our lesson and it worked really well to maximize their energy and attention, both for our lessons and for Hebrew through Movement time. We will continue this going forward. Routine change can be tough, and First Grade B handled it like stars! When we come back from break, we will begin a unit on Israel. Hope you all enjoy your break!
