Kindergarten: Shabbat & Achrayut for Animals
Last Saturday we talked about Shabbat being a special day for the Jewish people, and what fun it can be to celebrate it with family and friends. We learned that there are many ways to guard and keep the Shabbat, which is one of our responsibilities
as Jews. Lighting the Shabbat candles is one way to guard the Shabbat. One idea for why we light two candles is that the first one for our actions and the second is for our feelings. The kids enjoyed making them!
Hebrew through movement:
להדליק (to light), ארץ (earth)
Questions to ask your kids:
1. How do we guard and keep the Shabbat?
2. What do the two candles we light on Shabbat symbolize? (Raya’s Class)
Elie’s Class
This past week we continued to learn about Achrayut by learning about animals. We heard Bob Dylan’s “Man Gave Names To All the Animals” and read a book about them. We learned the Hebrew words for Monkey – koof, Elephant – peel, Lion – areyeh and Kelev – dog, Chatool – cat, Fish – Dag. Each student was then assigned one of the animals and had to think about who takes care of them, where they live and what responsibility they have for themselves or we have for them as their caregivers. Then we got to color in place mats that depicted scenes in the Torah that have animals. We learned some bonus Hebrew words like Nachash (snake) and Gamal (camel).
Parents feel free to play the song found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjYdjjIN6HI
To ask at home:
- Act our their favorite animal and explain how we can take care of them!
K-2 Family Program
This week we wrapped up our Achrayut/Responsibility unit with parents and children planning together and then reflecting on all we have learned. We celebrated with a siyyum (completion ceremony) with a special prayer and donuts! Click here for the parent class and here for the student class. We look forward to beginning a brand new unit this Saturday on Kesher/Connection. Hope to see you there! !
