This week our Second graders continued their exploration of Torah stories!

Saturday Jewish Studies

Elie’s Class

This week we continued our review with a board game! The game combined jeopardy, Pictionary and acting. We went over everything from Adam and Eve to Purim. Next week we will start our unit on Passover!

David’s Class

Last week we finished our unit about Shabbat by experiencing the 25 hours of Shabbat in 25 minutes, starting with lighting the Shabbat candles and ending with The Havdallah ceremony. Next class, we will learn about the third book of the Torah, Leviticus/Vayikra, and return to a main theme of our year together: what it means to bring holiness into our world, we will also talk about Passover!

Tuesday Jewish Studies

This week we started the 2nd book in the Torah: Exodus! We read the story, “The Miracles of Passover” by Josh Hanft. In the story we learned of Moses’s life and how he was chosen to save the Jewish people and successfully did so. After reading, we worked in pairs to put slips of paper that had the major events in Moses’s story in order. Then we created comic book pages of the story. Next week we will explore how Moses was a leader and learn about the 10 Commandments.

David’s Class

Dear Parents,
This week we began the Book of Exodus, talking about Moshe’s childhood, the slavery in Egypt, the fact that Moshe grew up in Pharaoh’s palace, and the burning bush.
We tried to understand why the Holy One, blessed be He, was revealed by way of a burning bush, and what it symbolizes: The children suggested that it was like Moses in the river of the Nile, which survived, and I suggested continuing the idea to the Jewish people that despite all the fire survives.
At the end of the lesson, the children created wonderful works of art in the wake of the burning bush.
I hope you all have a wonderful week,
David

Hebrew Through Movement

Saturday

In Hebrew through movement we are still learning about colors. We reviewed the words: red (adom-אדום)

yellow(tzahov-צהוב)

green (yarok-ירוק)

blue (kachol-כחול)

hand (yad-יד)

leg/foot(regel-רגל)

We learned the meaning of the word “al” (on/over). After leaning all of the necessary words, we played a game of twister with all of the new words and had a great time!

Tuesday

Shalom Families – On Tuesday, we started our Pesach/Passover unit! For this HTM unit, students will engage with the Passover Hebrew vocabulary that is featured in the “Ma Nishtana” (The Four Questions), the items featured on the Seder Plate as well as other Hebrew words associated with Passover. This past Tuesday, we practiced singing the first part of the Ma Nishtana and focused on the following Hebrew words: lailah, leillot/night(s), matzah and chametz. We used visuals and pretend matzah. Next week we will eat real matzah and practice saying the blessing before eating the matzah. – B’shalom, Sharone
