CBE’s Democracy Team actively engages our community in pro-democracy work to combat voter suppression and help make sure that primaries and elections are free, fair, and accessible to all. We are also focusing on efforts to uphold core democratic principles and institutions and respond to threats to our democracy. Our work is strictly non-partisan.

There are a number of initiatives being planned for 2025, including:

  • writing and sending postcards to voter suppression states with Reclaim our Vote to provide critical voting information
  • voter registration and outreach with Brooklyn Voters Alliance
  • policy and advocacy work with CBE’s Refugee Task Force
  • partnering with Indivisible Brooklyn (INBK) on non-partisan policy and advocacy work to help advance the Tikkun Alliance’s mission.

One of our institutional partners, Jewish Partnership for Democracy: A More Perfect Union, has provided some guiding principles at this time:

  • Stay calm and focused. A common anti-democratic tactic is to overwhelm people to the point of paralysis. Stay calm and focused on issues where you can drive impact.
  • Be aware of your news consumption. Stay informed about developments relevant to your community, but give yourself time to process and act.
  • Keep hopeful and act local. It is not enough to defend against threats to democracy; we also need to proactively envision and build a more democratic society. We can do that most effectively in our own communities.
