This week our Second graders continued learning Torah stories from Genesis and Exodus.

Saturday Jewish Studies

Elie’s Class

This last week we learned about the golden calf and what happens when you make a mistake. My class walked through all the emotions the Jewish people felt and drew pictures of themselves there at Mt Sinai. They then drew picture of themselves at their seders.

David’s Class

This past Shabbat we journeyed with Moses as he led the Israelites to freedom, and received the 10 Commandments. Next Shabbat we are going to learn about when Moses’ brother Aaron created the Golden Calf to appease the Israelites’ need for a god they could see and touch! And how after this terrible event God and the Israelites reconciled through the building of the mishkan, the portable sanctuary that the Israelites schlepped through the wilderness

David’s Classes

Dear Parents,
This week we learned about Purim. We learned about the story of the megillah, about the different characters, we did a play according the megillah, and we talked about what it means to be a hero – are you born as heroes, is it something you grow, what kinds of heroes are there, and the famous spirderman quote – ‘With great powers comes great responsibility.’
We also dealt with the various mitzvot of the holiday [Mishloach Manot, gifts for the poor, Megillah reading, I did not mention the part of the wine 🙂 ].
May we all have a happy Purim,
David

Tuesday

Shalom Families,

On Tuesday, for HTM, we talked about the mitzvah of giving Mishloach Manot or Purim baskets to friends and family on Purim. The children practiced following the commands of placing cardboard pictures of different treats in Hebrew (oznei Haman / Hamantashen, tapuach / apple, shokolad / chocolate and bracha l’Purim (Purim greeting card) in mishloach manot and giving them to different classmates. We also took a quick poll in Hebrew to see the classes favorite flavor of oznei haman (tut /strawberry, shokolad or mish-mish /apricot). Tut won! The children were surprised by the fact that in Israel, these traditional Purim cookies are refered to as Haman’s ear and not his 3-cornered hat!
