Teshuvah & Beginning the New Year
This week, we discussed Yom Kippur and how we can begin again when we make mistakes. We did a classroom tashlich, where the kids drew or wrote about an attitude or behavior that they wanted to leave behind in the old year, and then they tore up their paper and cast it away.
During Hebrew Through Movement, we learned rutz (running) and rutz bamakom (running in place). Finally, we talked about the story of Jonah, and the importance of forgiveness.
Questions to Ask Your Child:
What did friends share about what their families do to help each other when there’s a hard time?
What did you do with the paper you ripped, why do you do that with the paper?
What teshuva (fixing) did Jonah do?
What teshuva (fixing) did the people of Ninveh do?
Was what Jonah did easy or hard? Why?
Was what the people of Ninveh did easy or hard? Why?
Family Program
During the family program students and families focused on forgiveness. Students used drama, song and stories to define forgiveness and to practice the process using forgiving words that the hurt person needs to hear. In chevruta (partnered learning) parents examined biblical texts about forgiveness between people and forgiveness between God and people as well as Talmudic and modern psychology texts about the process of granting and receiving forgiveness. Families took home their worksheets to continue focusing on forgiveness as well as the other themes we have been exploring as families in this hour.
