Program Information

We offer enrichment classes in a wide variety of activities: the arts, dance, sports, gymnastics, instructional swim, computers, science, theater, sewing, circus arts, cooking, and so much more. The majority of our classes consist of ten to twelve children. Our classes include STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math, as well as Maker’s education, meaning we host a wide variety of hands-on activities to support learning and encourage creativity, experimentation, growth, collaboration and community. Classes such as DIY Playground, Castles and Forts, Buildings and Structures, and Harry Potter’s Potions are just a few of the enrichment classes that spark interdisciplinary learning.

Hours & Daily Schedule

After school at PS 295 is available on school days, Monday-Friday, from 2:40-6:00PM.
Children will enroll and participate in one enrichment class per day. See below for the daily course listing.

If you are choosing our single class option, students can only stay for the one hour class.

At dismissal time, teachers will escort students participating in the after school program to the PS 295 cafeteria. The daily schedule for the program is as follows:

  • 2:40-3:45 PM: supervised outdoor play/choice time with a snack provided by the program in the cafeteria or selected enrichment activity
  • 3:45-4:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 4:45-5:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 5:45-6:00 PM: dismissal/pick up from the cafeteria
Late Pick Up

If you are running late, please call the security desk, (718) 965-0390 x1000. They will forward the message to the site supervisor. You will be charged $1 for every minute past 6:00 PM. After 3 late pick ups, the school reserves the right to suspend the child from the program.

Registration & Payment

To register, please complete the online registration form with your payment. The application is also available on the PS 39 website. There is a 5% discount for siblings.

Please indicate a first and second choice for each enrichment activity; enrollment is based on a first come first serve basis. Please note, CBE reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. If your child is going to be absent or if you need to make a change in your child’s schedule (permitted within the first two weeks of the trimester) please contact, Jesse Shiffman Ackerman, the site supervisor at PS 295. Some classes such as swim are held at CBE, 274 Garfield Place. Please check to see if pickup is at CBE for these classes.

Full payment for each trimester is due at the time of registration. If a payment plan is required please contact Lisa Wolf. There is a one time yearly registration fee of $75 per child. This is required for all participants, regardless of the number of days or semesters attending.

Monday

Circus Arts

Mondays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; 1st-2nd Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Run away, join the circus and still be home for dinner! Learn tumbling, juggling, clowning, partner acrobatics, rope and plate spinning, clown makeup, human pyramids, and much more! This fun filled class allows youngsters to become circus stars!

Magic

Mondays, 3rd-5th, 4:45 PM-5:45 PM
Make things appear, disappear and all sorts of magical things! We will learn amazing tricks with everyday objects, and build secret devices. Basics of magical trickiness, including sleight of hand, misdirection, and optical illusion will be covered. Get ready to make your friends marvel, gasp, and laugh!

Mystery Video

Mondays, 1st-2nd, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM
During this class, students will create an original mystery story, learn to use the video camera and sound equipment as well as acting and basic video editing techniques. The class will produce a video that will be screened at the completion of the course.

Comedy Special

Mondays, 3rd-5th, 4:45 PM-5:45 PM
Advanced video production for grades 3 and up. Students will learn the art and skills used to make an original comedy video. They will explore various types of humor and they write, direct, perform, shoot and edit an original video comedy that will be screened at the completion of the course.

Journey to Mars

Mondays, Pre K-1st, 2:45 PM-3:45 PM; Mondays, 2nd-5th, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM
What would a space station or a space colony look like on Mars? Blast off into space for an incredible creative journey. Using recycled materials, paper mache, wire, wood, etc. students will form a group project based on their imagination and interpretation of life on Mars. They will even be able to build their own “Mars Exploration Rover”.

Ninja Challenge

Tuesdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Learn strength, agility, and endurance while mastering fun obstacle courses! Each class consists of conditioning and action-packed obstacle courses: jumping, climbing, vaulting, tumbling, and parkour style moves. The Ninja Challenge class inspires teamwork as well as athleticism.

Sewing

Tuesdays, K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Learn basic sewing techniques while creating a doll of your own design or a pillow or beanbag creature.

Sewing/Quiltmaking

Tuesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Learn how to sew by hand piecing together a small quit. Basic patchwork technique using fun and colorful prints on squares of fabric. Design a quilt and sew it.

Gymnastics

This class is designed to help children become well-rounded gymnasts. A focus on graceful tumbling, strength, flexibility and more! Safety precautions are taken in all areas.

Kickball

Enjoy the fun and spirit of being part of a team sport. We’ll focus on coordination, strength & cooperation.

Puppetry – Magic

Enter the world of shadow, stick, hand and paper mache puppets. Explore different techniques of creation and the rich tradition of making puppets. Using everyday materials to create your own characters. Inspiration will be drawn from enchanted stories from around the world. The class will culminate in a puppet show where family and friends will be invited to witness their magic!

Advanced Puppetry- Magic

Kids Cook!

Baking techniques and basic nutritional concepts will be emphasized. Learn to cook old favorites, as well as new dishes. Max of ten students

Soccer

Learn basic skills and rules of the game, as well as coordination skills and teamwork

Improvisation

Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM; Wednesdays, K-2nd, 4:45-5:45 PM
Students will learn the basics of improvisation. They will explore how to create a scene from nothing and act out many different characters. This class will teach students how to think creatively on their feet and how to structure an improvised play

Imagination Theater

Wednesdays,Pre K-1st ,3:00-4:00 PM; Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 4:00-5:00 PM
In this class, students are able to explore different characters through movement and music. We may take a magic elevator to another universe and walk on the moon, become aliens, cowboys, or robots. Each class will focus on a different theme.

Instructional Swim

Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 2:45-3:45 PM; Wednesdays, K-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM
Students are taught fundamental swimming skills including: breath control, kicking, and floating. Swim focuses on stroke and rhythmic breathing. Must sign up for a full day. Parents must pick up at 5:45 at CBE Temple House (8th Ave and Garfield Place) Limit five students per class.

Bubble Bonanza & Flying Machines

Wednesdays, K-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM
This class will encompass 3 different science units; Bubble bonanza, children mix and compare bubble solutions and design and test bubble wands; Light and color, children observe rainbows on their bubbles and experiment with prisms; Flying things, children construct pinwheels, kites, parachutes and paper airplanes as they observe the effect of wind and weather on the flight of these contraptions.

Pilots and Race Car Drivers: The Physics of Motion and Flight

Wednesdays, 3rd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
What do Amelia Earhart and Madalena Antas have in common? They both broke records in their fields; piloting and race car driving. On a much smaller scale, students in this class will make and “test drive” mini race cars and planes. They’ll make small cars from recycled materials like soda bottles and milk cartons and try them on flat surfaces and inclined planes. In the spirit of engineering, they’ll make improvements to their vehicles as they see what works and what doesn’t. In the second part of the program, students will create various “flying machines”, like paper airplanes, helicopters and parachutes. They’ll learn how thrust, drag and design affect their inventions.

Comics and Illustrations

Wednesdays, 1st-2nd, 4:45-5:45 PM; Wednesdays, 3rd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
In this class I will be instructing students how to create their own comic strips and short graphic narratives. We will draw from personal experiences, dreams and imagination, and using the language of cartooning transfer these ideas and stories to paper. Starting with drawing basics and simple structure of stories on the page, we will discuss creating comics from the ground up and end up with material that’s ready to print and publish for the world to see.

Thursday

BitBots Basics

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Your child will choose recyclables such as plastic bottles, cardboard and paper to create sculptures that when combined with littleBits, come to life and light up, twist, turn, buzz, blink, and shake!. Through the process of designing and building, your child will experience the practical and cultural possibilities of new inventions! littleBits are simple electronic modules, each with specific functions, which can be snapped together magnetically to create large and elaborate circuits for prototyping and play.

Robot Lab

Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Each week, students learn a new engineering concept, either starting a single-day project or continuing a multi-week group project. We will integrate hands-on building experience with demonstrations of engineered objects in the world that use the same concepts. Through the process of designing and building, your child will experience the practical and cultural possibilities of new inventions! Recycled materials serve a dual purpose in all of our workshops: they help us teach about sustainability while ensuring that each project is as unique as its inventor. Please note: electronic components are not taken home.

Capoeira

Thursdays, K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
This self-defense class promotes self-confidence and builds self-esteem. You will learn ABADA-Capoeira techniques, Brazilian Portuguese language, music and songs, acrobatic movements, and how to have fun while being healthy. Each student will improve his/her concentration, reaction time, and problem solving ability. (The first five students to enroll receive a free uniform!)

Chess

Thursdays, K-5th, 2:45-3:45 PM
No previous experience necessary. Have fun learning all the moves and rules of chess, as well as how to win and lose gracefully. Good sportsman- ship and creative thinking stressed. Weekly playing sessions.

Open Studio

Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
An exciting experimental art class in a studio atmosphere. The students will be using various materials and media related to themselves, their world and interests. We will emphasize creativity and personal interpretation.

Building with Recycled Materials

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Using all kinds of recycled materials children will create their own buildings, structures, cities, transportation hubs. Creativity and imagination are the only requirements for this “maker’s space” class.

Friday

Group Piano

Fridays, 1st-2nd, 2:45-3:45 PM; Fridays, 3rd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Class is limited to five students. Children will learn the basics of piano playing through exploration of a vast repertoire. We will go through the first steps of ensemble playing, musical aural training, and the foundations of different styles, such as Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop. Children will acquire knowledge about rhythm, harmony and musical structure, as well as correct hand position and finger dexterity.

Build It!

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Using Legos and other manipulatives, children will enjoy the hands on experience of creating patterns and shapes, while improving their number sense. Imagination and creativity are needed for this class.

Kids Cook!

Sports Sampler

A little bit of everything – soccer, basketball, and kickball. Each sport for one month. Focus is on skill building, rules of the game, coordination, and teamwork.

Jewelry Making

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; Fridays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Children will be creative while exploring key math concepts such as one-toone correspondence, pattern recognition and measurement. Children will make their own beads using recycled materials while focusing on color and texture. Great for improving skills in eye/hand coordination.

Mini Camps & Half Day Programs

Families will have the option to register for additional child care at our CBE location on days the school is closed due to clerical days, half-days, and school vacations, for an additional fee. Pick up on these days will be at CBE.
