Program Information

We offer enrichment classes in a wide variety of activities: the arts, dance, sports, gymnastics, instructional swim, computers, science, theater, sewing, circus arts, cooking, and so much more. The majority of our classes consist of ten to twelve children. Our classes include STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math, as well as Maker’s education, meaning we host a wide variety of hands-on activities to support learning and encourage creativity, experimentation, growth, collaboration and community. Classes such as DIY Playground, Castles and Forts, Buildings and Structures, and Harry Potter’s Potions are just a few of the enrichment classes that spark interdisciplinary learning.

Hours & Daily Schedule

After school at PS 295 is available on school days, Monday-Friday, from 2:40-6:00PM.
Children will enroll and participate in one enrichment class per day. See below for the daily course listing.

If you are choosing our single class option, students can only stay for the one hour class.

At dismissal time, teachers will escort students participating in the after school program to the PS 295 cafeteria. The daily schedule for the program is as follows:

  • 2:40-3:45 PM: supervised outdoor play/choice time with a snack provided by the program in the cafeteria or selected enrichment activity
  • 3:45-4:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 4:45-5:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 5:45-6:00 PM: dismissal/pick up from the cafeteria
Late Pick Up

If you are running late, please call the security desk, (718) 965-0390 x1000. They will forward the message to the site supervisor. You will be charged $1 for every minute past 6:00 PM. After 3 late pick ups, the school reserves the right to suspend the child from the program.

Registration & Payment

To register, please complete the online registration form with your payment. The application is also available on the PS 39 website. There is a 5% discount for siblings.

Please indicate a first and second choice for each enrichment activity; enrollment is based on a first come first serve basis. Please note, CBE reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. If your child is going to be absent or if you need to make a change in your child’s schedule (permitted within the first two weeks of the trimester) please contact, Jesse Shiffman Ackerman, the site supervisor at PS 295. Some classes such as swim are held at CBE, 274 Garfield Place. Please check to see if pickup is at CBE for these classes.

Full payment for each trimester is due at the time of registration. If a payment plan is required please contact Lisa Wolf. There is a one time yearly registration fee of $75 per child. This is required for all participants, regardless of the number of days or semesters attending.

Monday

Open Studio

Mondays, 3rd-5th, 4:45 PM-5:45 PM
An exciting experimental art class in a studio atmosphere. The students will be using various materials and media related to themselves, their world and interests. We will emphasize creativity and personal interpretation.

Circus Arts

Mondays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45PM; Mondays, 1st-2nd, 3:45 PM-4:45 PM
Run away, join the circus, and still be home for dinner! Kids will tumble, juggle, hula hoop, learn clown skits and slapstick, spin plates, hula hoop, balance feathers, balance human beings in pyramids, & more. A fun way to exercise, learn theatrical skills, & develop self-confidence.

Magic

Mondays, 3rd – 5th, 4:45-5:45 pm
Have you ever wondered how magicians do their tricks? Can they really read people’s minds? In magic class, we will learn to do amazing things with everyday objects. New tricks will be taught this term. Get ready to fool your parents and entertain your friends!

Basketball

Mondays, 2nd-5th, 4:00 PM-5:00 PM
Class focuses on 5 min factors of basket- ball: foot work, dribbling, passing/catching, ball handling and shooting. Students will also learn how to play offense and defense, as well as the 5 positions of basketball–what these positions are and how to play them.

CBE TV- “Mission to Mars”

Mondays, 1st-2nd, 2:45-3:45 PM
Students will make an original Science-Fiction movie where they travel to Mars and beyond. During the class, students will learn to use the video camera, and sound equipment as well as acting, writing and basic animation editing techniques as they go where no kid has gone before.

CBE TV (Advanced) “The Science Fiction Movie”

Mondays, 3rd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
Students will make an original science fiction film based on recent scientific discoveries. Students will choose a topic, brainstorm about the possible outcomes of the discovery and write a script. They will then shoot, direct, act, and edit their movie for the spring primere.

Atlantis- the Lost City

Mondays, Pre-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; Mondays, 1st-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM
From mythology to folklore, the fabled lost city of Atlantis has captured our imagination for centuries. Using a variety of recycled materials, students will create their own underwater city; included in this vision is their versions of sea creatures, mermaids & mermen in underwater scenes.

Ninja Challenge

Tuesdays, 1st-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM
Learn strength, agility, and endurance while mastering fun obstacle courses! Each class consists of conditioning and action-packed obstacle courses: jumping, climbing, vaulting, tumbling, and parkour style moves. The Ninja Challenge class inspires teamwork as well as athleticism.

Sewing

Learn basic sewing techniques while creating a doll of your own design or a pillow or beanbag creature.

Sewing/Quiltmaking

Tuesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-5:00 PM
Learn how to sew by hand piecing together a small quit. Basic patchwork technique using fun and colorful prints on squares of fabric. Design a quilt and sew it.

Gymnastics

This class is designed to help children become well-rounded gymnasts. A focus on graceful tumbling, strength, flexibility and more! Safety precautions are taken in all areas.

Kickball

Enjoy the fun and spirit of being part of a team sport. We’ll focus on coordination, strength & cooperation.

Puppetry – Spring Fairytales

Tuesdays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; Tuesdays, K-1st Grade, 3:45-4:45PM
Enter the world of shadow, stick, hand and paper mache puppets. Explore different techniques of creation and the rich tradition of making puppets. Using everyday materials to create your own characters. Inspiration will be drawn from fairy tales. The class will culminate in a puppet show where family and friends will be invited to witness the magic!

Advanced Puppetry

Tuesdays, 2nd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
Enter the world of shadow, marionette, foam and furry puppets. Explore different techniques of creation and the rich tradition of making puppets. Using everyday materials to create your own characters. This is an advanced class where inspiration will be drawn from popular puppet makers and animators like Tim Burton and Jim Henson. The class will culminate in a spectacular show written by the students where family and friends will be invited to witness the magic!

Gardening at CBE

Tuesday, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45; Tuesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
CBE has a new courtyard garden! Join us this spring as we develop our garden and connect to nature. Students will develop basic horticulture skills like seeding, mulching and weeding as we bring our garden planters to life. We will grow herbs and seasonal vegetables and enjoy nature crafts, exploration and other hands on activities.

Wednesday

Kids Cook!

Wednesdays, Pre K-1st, 3:00-4:00 PM; Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 4:00-5:00 PM
Baking techniques and basic nutritional concepts will be emphasized. Learn to cook old favorites, as well as new dishes. Max of ten students.

Tennis

Wednesdays, K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Classes feature interactive drills and games that teach the fundamentals of tennis: forehand, backhand, volley, serves and overhead. Students will develop fine and gross motor skills as well as eye/hand coordination skills crucial to tennis. Sneakers and a water bottle are required. Racquets are provided, but if you have your own racket you can bring it.

Instructional Swim

Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM; Wednesdays, K-2nd, 4:45-5:45 PM
Students are taught fundamental swimming skills including: breath control, kicking, and floating. Swim focuses on stroke and rhythmic breathing. Must sign up for a full day. Parents must pick up at 5:45 at CBE Temple House (8th Ave and Garfield Place) Limit five students per class.

Comics and Illustrations

Wednesdays, 3rd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
In this class I will be instructing students how to create their own comic strips and short graphic narratives. We will draw from personal experiences, dreams and imagination, and using the language of cartooning transfer these ideas and stories to paper. Starting with drawing basics and simple structure of stories on the page, we will discuss creating comics from the ground up and end up with material that’s ready to print and publish for the world to see.

Red, Blue and Glue – Mixed Media

Wednesdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
This creative and imaginative class introduces young artists to the world of collage; using paint, tissue paper, found objects, buttons, seeds and fabric children become their own designers. Creating fantasies and two and three dimensional work. Group murals will be encouraged.

CBE KIDS Detective Club

Wednesdays, 3rd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Junior sleuths will investigate crime scenes – just like real forensic scientists do. They’ll find clues, meet suspects and investigate evidence to come up with solutions.While engrossed in mysteries like “The Case of the Bicycle Crash” or the “The Case of the Missing Diamond” children will learn to understand the difference between observations and inferences. They’ll solve crimes and puzzles by taking fingerprints, identify ransom notes using chromotography and identify suspects through soil samples. Excerpts from current children’s mystery books will be read aloud. Students will develop their own mysteries for others to solve.

Creepy Crawly Creatures: Life Sciences

Wednesdays, K-2nd, 2:45-3:45PM
Earthworms, snails and pillbugs are sure to fascinate young nature explorers. Students will build soil terrariums and observe how these tiny animals feed, move and interact. They’ll use magnifiers to discover body segments, legs and tentacles and create clay models of what they observe. They’ll mix their own “dirt recipe” and sprout seeds to demonstrate how plants and animals depend on each other. Dress for the weather since many classes will take place outdoors.

World Drumming

Wednesdays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; Wednesdays, 1st-2nd Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
This drumming course is an eclectic and enriching way for your child to learn rhythms from Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. The class includes fun warm- ups with body rhythms and chants.

Thursday

Capoeira

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
This self-defense class promotes self-confidence and builds self-esteem. You will learn ABADA-Capoeira techniques, Brazilian Portuguese language, music and songs, acrobatic movements, and how to have fun while being healthy. Each student will improve his/her concentration, reaction time, and problem solving ability. (The first five students to enroll receive a free uniform!)

Chess

Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 2:45-3:45 PM
No previous experience necessary. Have fun learning all the moves and rules of chess, as well as how to win and lose gracefully. Good sportsman- ship and creative thinking stressed. Weekly playing sessions.

BitBots (Koko- Open Source)

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 3:45-4:45 PM
Our combination of simple batteries, motors and LED lights with recyclables and found objects sparks imaginations and gets kids thinking like engineers. First, we explain how the materials work, exploring circuits and how to construct them. Next, students use re-purposed materials to build a creature or object that they will insert the motors and lights into later (for example, they may build a car with bottle-top wheels then add a motor to make the car move across the room). At the end, students share their creations with the group! There is an extra $50 fee for this class.

DIY in 3D

Using a variety of materials, such as clay, plaster, paper mache, etc. Students will explore their identity and the world around them.

Soccer

Learn basic skills and rules of the game, as well as coordination skills and teamwork.

Inventor’s Lab Simple Machine (Koko- Open Source)

Thursdays, 2nd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
Kids will discover how and why each of the six basic simple machines was invented (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley) as they apply this knowledge towards a series of fun challenges. Through trial and error experiments, kids will work together in small teams to build simple and compound machines and have a chance to practice collaborative problem solving and creative solutions. The class will also include learning about artists that are also scientists -from Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci to contemporaries Fischli and Weiss – who will inspire the group to create their own original inventions.

Class is limited to five students. Children will learn the basics of piano playing through exploration of a vast repertoire. We will go through the first steps of ensemble playing, musical aural training, and the foundations of different styles, such as Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop. Children will acquire knowledge about rhythm, harmony and musical structure, as well as correct hand position and finger dexterity. There is an extra $50 fee for this class.

Painting, Drawing & Pastels

Using a variety of materials (paint, oil pastels, tissue paper, etc.) students will explore their identity and the world around them

Sports Sampler

A little bit of everything – soccer, basketball, and kickball. Each sport for one month. Focus is on skill building, rules of the game, coordination, and teamwork.

Jewelry Making

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; Fridays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Children will be creative while exploring key math concepts such as one-tone correspondence, pattern recognition and measurement. Children will make their own beads using recycled materials while focusing on color and texture. Great for improving skills in eye/hand coordination.

Legos

Students make small simple machines using set plans and create their own Lego world.

Mini Camps & Half Day Programs

Families will have the option to register for additional child care at our CBE location on days the school is closed due to clerical days, half-days, and school vacations, for an additional fee. Pick up on these days will be at CBE.
