Program Information

We offer enrichment classes in a wide variety of activities: the arts, dance, sports, gymnastics, instructional swim, computers, science, theater, sewing, circus arts, cooking, and so much more. The majority of our classes consist of ten to twelve children. Scroll down for a comprehensive list of the enrichment classes that we offer.

Hours & Daily Schedule

After school at PS 295 is available on school days, Monday-Friday, from 2:40-6:00PM.
Children will enroll and participate in one enrichment class per day. See below for the daily course listing.

If you are choosing our single class option, students can only stay for the one hour class.

At dismissal time, teachers will escort students participating in the after school program to the PS 295 cafeteria. The daily schedule for the program is as follows:

  • 2:40-3:45 PM: supervised outdoor play/choice time with a snack provided by the program in the cafeteria or selected enrichment activity
  • 3:45-4:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 4:45-5:45 PM: selected enrichment activity or organized games/activities and homework help
  • 5:45-6:00 PM: dismissal/pick up from the cafeteria
Late Pick Up

If you are running late, please call the security desk, (718) 965-0390 x1000. They will forward the message to the site supervisor. You will be charged $1 for every minute past 6:00 PM. After 3 late pick ups, the school reserves the right to suspend the child from the program.

Registration & Payment

To register, please complete the online registration form with your payment. The application is also available on the PS 39 website. There is a sibling discount of $75 on the 2nd child’s registration.

Please indicate a first and second choice for each enrichment activity; enrollment is based on a first come first serve basis. Please note, CBE reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. If your child is going to be absent or if you need to make a change in your child’s schedule (permitted within the first two weeks of the trimester) please contact, Jesse Shiffman Ackerman, the site supervisor at PS 295. Some classes such as swim are held at CBE, 274 Garfield Place. Please check to see if pickup is at CBE for these classes.

Full payment or setting up a payment plan for each trimester is due at the time of registration. There is a per-term registration fee of $45 per child. This is required for all participants, regardless of the number of days or semesters attending.

Monday

Circus Arts

Mondays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; 1st-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM
Run away, join the circus, and still be home for dinner! Kids will tumble, juggle, hula hoop, learn clown skits and slapstick, spin plates, hula hoop, balance feathers, balance human beings in pyramids, & more. A fun way to exercise, learn theatrical skills, & develop self-confidence.

Clay Animation

Mondays, 1st-2nd, 3:45-4:45 PM; 3rd-5th, 4:45-5:45 PM
Make your wildest imaginary world come to life in this fantastical class where kids will get a chance to create real stop motion animation with mainly clay and an array of other materials like wire, cardboard, foil and more! We will take inspiration from many stop motion animation movies. Kids will get an introduction to animating, camera work and lighting in this class.

Magic

Mondays, 3rd-5th Grade, 4:45-5:45 PM
Have you ever wondered how magicians do their tricks? Can they really read people’s minds? In magic class, we will learn to do amazing things with everyday objects. New tricks will be taught this term. Get ready to fool your parents and entertain your friends!

Mask Making & Paper Sculptures

Mondays, Pre K-K, 2:45-3:45 PM; 1st-2nd Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Children will learn about masks made by people from different cultures and their purpose; they will understand how masks can be used to represent and animal, character, mythical creature, or natural element. The class will also explore building and creating using paper as sculpture. Recycled material will also be included in this class.

Open Studio

Mondays, 3rd-5th Grade, 4:45-5:45 PM
An exciting experimental art class in a studio atmosphere. The students will be using various materials and media related to themselves, their world and interests. We will emphasize creativity and personal interpretation.

Tennis

Mondays, K-1st Grade, 2:45-3:45 PM; 2nd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Classes feature interactive drills and games that teach the fundamentals of tennis: forehand, backhand, volley, serves and overhead. Students will develop fine and gross motor skills as well as eye/hand coordination skills crucial to tennis. Sneakers and a water bottle are required. Racquets are provided, but if you have your own racket you can bring it.

Gymnastics

Learn strength, agility, and endurance while mastering fun obstacle courses! Each class consists of conditioning and action-packed obstacle courses: jumping, climbing, vaulting, tumbling, and parkour style moves. The Ninja Challenge class inspires teamwork as well as athleticism.

Kickball

Tuesdays, 2nd-5th Grade, 4:00-5:00 PM
Enjoy the fun and spirit of being part of a team sport. We’ll focus on coordination, strength & cooperation.

Kodu Arcade – Coding through 3D Video Game Design from Code Advantage

Tuesdays, 1st- 3rd Grade, 2:45-3:45 PM
One of the best ways to get a child excited is to allow them to create something of their own. In this class, we enable young kids to make their own 3D video games by using fundamental coding concepts. Children will create games such as Pac-Man, King of the Hill, and their very own superhero adventure game! Students are encouraged to personalize every game by adding in their own ideas. Learning to code at a young age allows children to exercise critical thinking, creative expression, and apply logical reasoning.
*There is an additional $150 fee for this course.

Minecraft from CodeAdvantage

Tuesdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Does your child love Minecraft? Do they want to learn more about the game and make fun, creative projects in it? In Minecraft Kids, your child will learn everything there is to know about Minecraft, from start to finish. Along the way, they will create buildings in Minecraft like zoos, roller coasters, mazes, and even a Rube Goldberg machine! Through these lessons they will learn about the fundamentals of such topics as coding, circuitry, and physics. Minecraft Kids is a can’t miss class for students who want to master Minecraft.

Puppetry – Spring Fairytales

Enter the world of shadow, stick, hand and paper mache puppets. Explore different techniques of creation and the rich tradition of making puppets. Using everyday materials to create your own characters. Inspiration will be drawn from fairy tales. The class will culminate in a puppet show where family and friends will be invited to witness the magic!

Advanced Puppetry

Tuesdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 4:45-5:45PM
Enter the world of shadow, marionette, foam and furry puppets. Explore different techniques of creation and the rich tradition of making puppets. Using everyday materials to create your own characters. This is an advanced class where inspiration will be drawn from popular puppet makers and animators like Tim Burton and Jim Henson. The class will culminate in a spectacular show written by the students where family and friends will be invited to witness the magic!

Sewing

Tuesdays, K-1st Grade, 2:45-3:45PM
Learn basic sewing techniques while creating a doll of your own design or a pillow or beanbag creature.

Sewing/Quiltmaking

Tuesdays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Learn how to sew by hand piecing together a small quit. Basic patchwork technique using fun and colorful prints on squares of fabric. Design a quilt and sew it.

Wednesday

Basketball

Wednesdays, 2nd-5th Grade, 4:00-5:00 PM
Class focuses on 5 min factors of basketball: foot work, dribbling, passing/catching, ball handling and shooting. Students will also learn how to play offense and defense, as well as the 5 positions of basketball–what these positions are and how to play them.

Comics and Illustrations

Wednesdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
In this class I will be instructing students how to create their own comic strips and short graphic narratives. We will draw from personal experiences, dreams and imagination, and using the language of cartooning transfer these ideas and stories to paper. Starting with drawing basics and simple structure of stories on the page, we will discuss creating comics from the ground up and end up with material that’s ready to print and publish for the world to see.

Hip hop

Wednesdays, 2nd-5th, 2:45-3:45 PM
Focuses on developing a child’s ability to associate rhythm to music. Introduces passive fundamentals of break-dance designed to develop muscle strength such as holding body weight and beginning-level acrobatics. Freestyle segment introduces a variety of rhythm based music

Instructional/Intermediate Swim

Wednesdays, K-2nd Grade, 4:45-5:45 PM; 2nd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Students are taught fundamental swimming skills including: breath control, kicking, and floating. Intermediate Swim focuses on stroke and rhythmic breathing. Having fun is encouraged!

Kids Cook!

Wednesdays, Pre K-1st Grade, 3:00-4:00 PM; 2nd-5th, 4:00-5:00 PM
Baking techniques and basic nutritional concepts will be emphasized. Learn to cook old favorites, as well as new dishes. Max of ten students.

Red, Blue and Glue – Mixed Media

Wednesdays, Pre K-1st Grade, 2:45-3:45 PM
This creative and imaginative class introduces young artists to the world of collage; using paint, tissue paper, found objects, buttons, seeds and fabric children become their own designers. Creating fantasies and two and three dimensional work. This spring we will include clay. Group murals will be encouraged.

What’s the Story with Slime (and other gooey stuff)

Wednesdays, K-2nd Grade, 2:45-3:45 PM; Wednesdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
Find out the science behind slime. What makes it so flexible, gooey and fun? What kind of substance is it anyway? (Think “polymers”) We will make many types of slime including edible, fluffy and glowing slime. You will be able to test and compare the attributes of different slime types by cutting, stretching and pounding them. Using the scientific process students will create and test other substances like glue and chalk. This class introduces concepts in the areas of material science and engineering.

World Drumming

This drumming course is an eclectic and enriching way for your child to learn rhythms from Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. The class includes fun warm- ups with body rhythms and chants.

Thursday

Adventures with Clay and Paper Mache

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Clay is a special kind of mud. We will explore some of the things you can do with clay. Pinch pots, coil method, slab, and others. We will look at pottery from other cultures. The second half of the semester will focus on paper mache. This practical craft form has been used for just about everything, from art objects, bowls to furniture.

Capoeira

Thursdays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
This self-defense class promotes self-confidence and builds self-esteem. You will learn ABADA-Capoeira techniques, Brazilian Portuguese language, music and songs, acrobatic movements, and how to have fun while being healthy. Each student will improve his/her concentration, reaction time, and problem solving ability. (The first five students to enroll receive a free uniform!)

Chess

Thursdays, Pre K-1st Grade 2:45-3:45 PM; Thursdays, 2nd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
No previous experience necessary. Have fun learning all the moves and rules of chess, as well as how to win and lose gracefully. Good sportsmanship and creative thinking stressed. Weekly playing sessions.

Destroy & Construct (Koko- Open Source)

Thursdays, 3rd-5th Grade, 3:45-4:45 PM
In our younger version of Destroy and Construct, our teaching artist provides discarded toys and other recycled materials for the kids to deconstruct and then use to create new inventions and unique environments. Encouraged by stories and questions from the teaching artist, kids learn new ways to engage with their social and physical environment and discover that trash can be turned into treasure. The class culminates with a show-and-tell where children can share their creations.

Robo Adventure-Earthbots

Thursdays, K-2nd Grade, 2:45-3:45 PM
Using LEGO robotics, students will learn about some of the coolest environments on the planet. They will create and program robots to: withstand the heat of volcanoes and avoid any lava in the way, have just the right amount of friction to pull their way up steep and snowy mountains, withstand the pressure of the ocean as they raise a periscope from its darkest depths, and more!

Soccer

Learn basic skills and rules of the game, as well as coordination skills and teamwork.

Advanced Comic Book

Group Piano

Class is limited to five students. Children will learn the basics of piano playing through exploration of a vast repertoire. We will go through the first steps of ensemble playing, musical aural training, and the foundations of different styles, such as Classical, Jazz, Rock and Pop. Children will acquire knowledge about rhythm, harmony and musical structure, as well as correct hand position and finger dexterity.
*There is an extra $50 fee for this class.

Instructional/Intermediate Swim

Students are taught fundamental swimming skills including: breath control, kicking, and floating. Swim focuses on stroke and rhythmic breathing. Must sign up for a full day. Parents must pick up at 5:45 at CBE Temple House (8th Ave and Garfield Place) Limit five students per class.

Jewelry Making

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM; 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Children will be creative while exploring key math concepts such as one-tone correspondence, pattern recognition and measurement. Children will make their own beads using recycled materials while focusing on color and texture. Great for improving skills in eye/hand coordination.

Kids Cook!

Baking techniques and basic nutritional concepts will be emphasized. Learn to cook old favorites, as well as new dishes. Max of ten students

Legos

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
Students make small simple machines using set plans and create their own Lego world.

Painting, Drawing & Pastels

Fridays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Using a variety of materials (paint, oil pastels, tissue paper, etc.) students will explore their identity and the world around them.

Sports Sampler

Fridays, Pre K-1st, 2:45-3:45 PM
A little bit of everything – soccer, basketball, and kickball. Each sport for one month. Focus is on skill building, rules of the game, coordination, and teamwork.

Volleyball

Fridays, 2nd-5th, 3:45-4:45 PM
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Skill and coordination will be stressed

Mini Camps & Half Day Programs

Families will have the option to register for additional child care at our CBE location on days the school is closed due to clerical days, half-days, and school vacations, for an additional fee. Pick up on these days will be at CBE.
