This past Saturday we talked about achrayut. We learned who the responsible people at Yachad are and that some responsibilities are choices and some are needs.
In 5th grade, we’ve been determining the important qualities good leaders should have through art, discussion and debate.
Tonight was our first Moving Traditions lesson, in which our seventh graders explored “teen stuff” like finding balance, building community and sharing what is stressful and exciting about becoming a teenager. The students participated in a series of teambuilders (including the one pictured here) to practice physically finding balance before we launched into a discussion about emotionally finding balance during adolescence. We will have another Moving Traditions lesson next week, and then when we resume after Thanksgiving, we’ll launch into the second trimester of electives. Some important announcements:
Last week we started our unit on achrayut (responsibility). We discussed how the meaning of achrayut centers around personal responsibility and being trusted to take care of certain things. We used the Adam and Eve story as a parallel
We started to learn about Abraham and Sarah this week. We talked about how Abraham was commanded to leave his homeland, and how he and his nephew, Lot, had to determine how they were using their new land in a way that respected the environment.
This past week we finished up our lesson on Kavod with a board game called the road to kavod. We had several cards with situations and students had to tell us if it was kavod or not.
This week we learned about motivation and respect. We started class by playing Barvaz, Barvaz, Chatul. Then, after our Hebrew Through Movement lesson, we read a few books and talked about how they related to our themes for the week.
We’ve begun our second main unit of the year, learning about leadership and connecting the mitzvot we’ve learned about to the values we see in our biblical leaders.
